We made two visits to Machu Picchu. The first was the final morning of our Inca Trail trek and included a two-hour guided tour. We went back the morning after on our own and spent about three hours. While early morning and late afternoon are probably better for avoiding crowds, we did not try to time our visits around anything other than convenience, much needed sleep and our train reservation back to Cusco.
