Day one begins with a meet-up at Ultimate Hikes in Queenstown and then a three-hour bus ride, with lunch stop, to Te Anau Downs (some hikers picked up at designated spots along the way).

At Te Anau downs, we boarded the boat for a one-hour ride across Lake Te Anau to the Glade Wharf, where we officially began the Milford Track. The first day's hike is a light one, at approximately one mile to Glade House, our first lodge. Once we settled in, the guides took us on a little orientation walk into the hills behind the lodge to introduce us to some of the flora and fauna we'd be seeing along the way.
