We landed at KEF at 10:30 am and drove out of the rental car lot just after noon. We drove south toward and along the coast - through alternating moss-covered lava fields and patches of purple Alaska lupine - before cutting north and picking up the Golden Circle near Selfoss. Our stops on the Golden Circle included Kerið crater, the Geysir geothermal area and Gullfoss. In between those, we also stopped for lunch at the Friðheimar tomato farm. Leaving Gullfoss, we realized we still had three hours of driving to reach our accommodation in the northwest - thus, we skipped Þingvellir National Park and took something of an overland (and not heavily traveled, apparently) route.
